トリエステTRIESTE、イタリアの東の果て。 常に歴史の波にさらされた、東欧・旧ユーゴスラヴィアへの玄関口。
中世よりの長い時間オーストリアの支配下にあり、20世紀前半になってからイタリアへ併合された、オーストリア文化の影響の色濃い国際都市。
ウィーンの影響でカフェが有名。 街中に歴史あるカフェ（CAFFE STORICO）もあります。そのうちの一つ、CAFFE TOMASEOへ。
カフェが多く優雅な雰囲気は、フランスに近いトリノ TORINOをも思い出します。 イタリア統一広場のカフェは広々として気持ちいい空間。

高台にある、ビザンツモザイクの美しいSan Giusto教会前からの港の眺めも素晴らしく。そこから「トリエステの坂道」を下り、再び街へ。
「勇者の埠頭」Molo Audace と呼ばれる海に突き出た埠頭は、地元の人々の散歩道。 仲間で集ったり、一人でずっと座って夕陽を眺めたり。
とてもフォトジェニック。 写真を撮るにも、寛いで街を味わうにも最高のスポットの一つです。

「東欧への玄関口」という言葉から想像していたよりも、ずっと明るく優雅で落ち着いた街でした。
ただ、鉄道駅が広々として明るく現代的であるのに比べ、隣にある長距離バスターミナルは、数十年もタイムスリップしたかのように古びていて
薄暗く閉鎖的で、かすかな不安と異国情緒を誘い。 ここが長い間、東欧との境である事を改めて感じました。

食事もBUFFETと呼ばれる食堂で、オーストリアやドイツ的料理も多く。 豚肉やザウワークラウト（キャベツの酢漬け）とか。
昼食は地元で人気の「BUFFET DA PEPI」へ。行列が出来ていました。ポークのサンドウィッチとビールをいただきました。おいしかったです！
肉料理の盛り合わせも人気メニュー。

イタリア統一広場の裏手に集まっている地区を見つけましたが、残念ながら物色する時間はほとんどなく。 またいつの日か。
そしてトリエステを後にし。 バスに乗って次の目的地、クロアチアPOREÇ（ポレチュ）へと向かいます。

Trieste, East end of Italy. The gateway to the Eastern Europe , ex-Yugoslavia.
For a long time from the Middle Ages, this city had been in hand of Austria, and was absorbed to Italy in 1920.
It is an international city, under the strong influence of Austrian culture. Trieste is famous for its CAFÉ. There are many CAFÉ like in Vienna, and we can find many“CAFFÉ STORICO” (historical café)
It is also a place of Umbert Saba, an Italian poet.
Trieste has a particular atmosphere, and some people say it’s not like an Italian city.
It is very elegant city, similar to those in Middle Europe such as Vienna, rather than in Italy.
Very spacious and agreeable place “Piazza dell’Unita d’Italia”, comfortable tiny walkway along the canal., The grateful and white palace “Miramare” located seaside is also very elegant.
On top of hill , there is a church “San Giusto”, whose inside is decorated by Bizantin mosaics.
If we go up “slopes of Trieste” (by Atsuko Suga, a Japanese writer), we can enjoy magnific view of Trieste and its port from the top of hill.
A Pier called "Molo Andace" (=Pier of Braves) is popular for the people to take a walk and to relax. It is photogenic spot, where we can see beautiful sunset.
It is a much more elegant, sober and vigorous city than I imagined.

Beer is very popular as drink, along with wine. As for foods, we can enjoy local dishes strongly influenced by German or Austrian (such as Pork & Sauerkraut = Cabbage) at typical restaurants so-called “BUFFET”
This city is famous also for the antiques. I found an area with many antique shops, but regretfully I had no time to “shop around”… I’d like to visit this city again, one day !
Then, my trip continues. Taking bus from the terminal (which is very old & classic !), I left Trieste for the next destination, Poreç in Croatia..
